The Insider’s Guide to the Best of Catalina Island
Sheri has been taking her kids to Catalina Island since they were little, so this place is full of memories—and nostalgia always adds a little magic to any getaway. While many Southern Californians know it’s there, surprisingly, so many don’t realize what a fun weekend escape it can be. Catalina isn’t just for locals; it’s also perfect for families, couples, or friends traveling from across the country. Let us help you craft the perfect holiday in the heart of Avalon.
Where to Stay
Avalon has plenty of hotels, though nothing quite reaches five-star luxury. If you want to stay close to the beach, shops, restaurants, and bars, booking a hotel in Avalon—or renting a private cottage—is the way to go. Sheri personally loves Hamilton Cove. While it’s a little further from the city, each unit comes with a golf cart, making it easy to explore the island.
This time, Sheri’s family rented part of a duplex, and it was sensational. A three-bedroom, three-bathroom unit with a kitchen, living room, dining room, and a large patio—truly private with views that cannot be beaten. One of Sheri’s favorite touches? A huge picture window over the kitchen sink that made cooking while watching the ocean a pure joy. The oversized deck comes with a BBQ, perfect for dinner al fresco. They cooked each night, enjoyed drinks on the patio, and played board games in the living room—a cozy, fun way to unwind after a day of adventure.
Things to Do
Catalina is packed with activities for all types of travelers:
- Water adventures: Scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking—if you’re diving or snorkeling, Sheri highly recommends Diving Catalina. Fun fact: Parker and Sheri are featured on their “Night Snorkel” page!
- Land adventures: Golf, pickleball, Jeep safaris, zip-lining, and hiking up Mt. Ada for breathtaking views.
- Food & Drink: Start your morning at one of the island’s three coffee shops for a cappuccino and pastry. For lunch or dinner, Antonio’s Pizza is a must—serving the island for over 40 years.
Catalina really has something for everyone. Families will love the variety of activities and beaches, couples can enjoy romantic sunset views, and groups of friends can fill their days with adventure or relaxation.
